Ballet Dance became popular in 1681, twenty years after the Royal Academy of Dance was founded through the orders of King Louis XIV of France. In this period of the ballet history, ballet dancers were still wearing high-heeled shoes until a century after. In the middle of the 18th century, a famous dancer Marie Camargo of the Paris Opera Ballet initiated the use of flat shoes. The high-heeled standards were abolished completely from the ballet costume during the French Revolution.
The first style of flat ballet shoes had a sole made of leather not reaching all the way to the edges, giving it a flexible nature. It was specially created for proper execution of classical ballet dance steps. Using a flat ballet shoes lessen physical trauma, lesser chances for embarrassing situations. Tripping or stumbling while dancing was greatly eliminated. The flat ballet shoes gained wide acceptance, and the new standards glued and transformed the modern ballet tradition. For Optimal fit, people also look for the ones that have single band across the arch of the foot, or the ones that have bands that go across the top of the arch to complement the flat design.

Nowadays, the modern flat shoes have split soles for greater flexibility. Usually soft made from canvas or satins, ballet shoes come in wide range of colors including the tan-colored versions. This color achieved the appearance of bare-footed fashion for most ballet dancer, both men and women. This is a great development compared to the traditional pink-colored for women and black or white for men.
The most durable ballet shoes in the market today are the ones made of leather. Long-lasting just like any typical shoes, these can even be worn outside of the ballet stage. The Canvas and satin on the other hand, are less expensive, as they wear out very quickly. Satin shoes are exclusive only for stage performance.
The reputation of flexibility and great comfort of the ballet shoes reached the fashion world. A perfect pair of flat shoes that resembles a ballet shoes with the same durability and flexibility had become widespread, and gained massive following. These types of flat shoes come in several colors with different styles. From the most famous boutiques, to the world’s known flea and night markets, down to the simplest street merchants, they all display this kind of flat shoes for people to experience the comfort that the ballet shoes are known for.
